A Scout Toward Aldie: Herman Melville's Famous Poem and its 150th Anniversary

  • Mt. Zion Historic Park 40309 John Mosby Highway Aldie, VA, 20105 United States (map)

On August 17, 1866 Battle Pieces (and Aspects of the War) was published, including the epic poem "The Scout Toward Aldie," detailing a mission by the 2nd Massachusetts and the 13th and 16th New York Cavalries to find John Singleton Mosby, the Gray Ghost.

Our program will include a talk by Dr. Jonathan Cook of Middleburg Academy on Melville and his poem, including its location and significance.  Additionally, we will use the 165-year old Mt. Zion Church as our venue for a group reading of the poem.  The scout actually went by Mt. Zion Church in April 1864.

Co-sponsored by MHAA and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.
