Blood on the Snow: Mosby's Rangers vs. Cole's Cavalry, January 1864

  • Harpers Ferry Brewing Company 37412 Adventure Center Lane Purcellville, VA, 20132 United States (map)

As the Civil War entered its third year, a rivalry had developed between two cavalry battalions. On one side stood John Mosby and his famed Rangers, while on the other side were the men of the First Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry, better known as Cole's Cavalry. These units were no strangers to one another.

In early 1864, Mosby's Rangers and Cole's Cavalry clashed in two memorable fights. On New Years Day, the Rangers got the upper hand over their adversaries at Five Points. Just nine days later, Cole's men emerged victorious at Loudoun Heights, handing Mosby one of his worst wartime defeats.

Join the Mosby Heritage Area Association on a special bus tour that will provide an in-depth study of this horsemen rivalry that raged through the Loudoun Valley in early 1864. The tour will visit the sites of the two skirmishes as well as multiple sites in between that are associated with the incredible journey of one Union officer who eluded capture in the wake of the fight at Five Points. Some of these stops include:

  • Five Points

  • Goose Creek Friends Meeting

  • St. Paul’s Church

  • Loudoun Heights battlefield and Henry Cole’s headquarters

Admission to the tour covers the six hour tour and lunch. Attendees are invited to join MHAA staff for an informal gathering at Harpers Ferry Brewing Company at the conclusion of the tour.

MHAA's Public Programs Coordinator Travis Shaw and Director of Education Kevin Pawlak will lead the tour.
