Jeb Stuart’s actions in the summer of 1863 have long been one of the most controversial aspects of the Gettysburg Campaign. Given discretionary orders by Robert E. Lee, Stuart rode off on a fateful raid through Maryland and Pennsylvania, leaving Lee with a woeful lack of reconnaissance as his army entered Union territory. When Stuart arrived at Gettysburg on July 2nd, he was too late to affect the outcome of the battle, and his absence is often cited as one of the critical factors in the Confederate defeat.
Historian Eric Wittenberg, author of Plenty of Blame to Go Around, will lead us on an in-depth tour as we follow in the footsteps of Jeb Stuart during his fateful ride.
The event begins with a Friday evening reception at the Seminary Ridge Museum in Gettysburg, where guests will get an overview of Stuart’s campaign, as well as an opportunity to explore the museum and take in views from the famous cupola.
The following day, the bus will depart from the Gettysburg Day’s Inn for an all day guided bus tour following Stuart’s route, including stops at Westminster, York, Carlisle, and more!
